ODOUR CONTROL FOR WASTEWATER, FOOD AND WASTE SITES
Odour control scrubbers for H2S, ammonia and mercaptans
Chemical scrubbers that remove odour at source on wastewater, food, rendering and waste sites. Staged for the compounds you actually have, with dosing that holds performance between visits.
✓Acid and caustic-oxidising stages for mixed odours
✓Designed against the odour compounds, not just the airflow
✓Dosing and monitoring that keep working unattended

Odour is judged at the fence, not at the stack
Most odour complaints come from a handful of compounds at very low concentrations. Remove the right ones at source and the complaints stop. Remove the wrong ones and they do not. An odour control scrubber is judged the same way: by what reaches the neighbours, not by what it does at the stack.
Pumping stations, inlet works and sludge
Septic sewage and sludge handling release sulphur compounds that carry a long way, often close to homes.
In the air: H₂S, mercaptans and organic sulphides
What we fit: Caustic scrubber with an oxidant, sized for the H₂S peak
Cooking, rendering and by-product lines
High airflows with a mixed load of nitrogen and sulphur compounds and cooked organics.
In the air: Ammonia, amines, sulphur compounds, fatty acids and aldehydes
What we fit: Acid stage then caustic-oxidising stage, with polishing where organics remain
Composting and waste transfer
Large, low-concentration airflows from halls and bunkers, with loads that change by the day.
In the air: Ammonia, amines and sulphur compounds
What we fit: Multi-stage scrubber with dosing that follows the load
Odours our odour control scrubbers treat
| Odour compound | Smells like | How we scrub it |
|---|---|---|
| Hydrogen sulphide (H₂S) | Rotten eggs | Caustic with an oxidant, such as hypochlorite or hydrogen peroxide |
| Mercaptans and organic sulphides | Rotten cabbage, garlic | Caustic with an oxidant; dosing set for the sulphur load |
| Ammonia | Sharp, pungent | Dilute sulphuric acid stage |
| Amines | Fishy | Dilute acid stage, ahead of the caustic stage |
| Fatty acids and aldehydes | Rancid, cooked | Partly removed by caustic; a carbon or biological polishing stage may be needed |
Not sure what you are smelling? Send us any odour survey or gas analysis you have, or we can arrange sampling before we size anything.
Designed against the compounds, not just the airflow
Staged for mixed odours
Ammonia and amines go to an acid stage, sulphur compounds to a caustic-oxidising stage. Each stage is sized for the compounds it removes.
Dosing that holds overnight
pH and ORP measured and reagent dosed to setpoint, so the scrubber performs the same at 3am as it did at commissioning. Alarms go to your BMS.
Built and wet-tested in house
Polypropylene vessels and packing fabricated by our own team and run wet in our factory before dispatch, for indoor or outdoor installation.
From odorous air to a clean boundary
A typical two-stage train for a mixed odour. Sites with only H₂S need just the caustic-oxidising stage.
Materials: polypropylene vessels and packing, with PVDF where an oxidant or temperature calls for it.
Controls: pH and ORP dosing to setpoint, liquor flow and level interlocks, signals to your BMS or PLC.
Honest scope: a chemical scrubber will not remove every organic odour. Where some remain we say so, and add a carbon stage or recommend biological treatment.
Evidence, not just equipment
- Datasheet with inlet and predicted outlet concentration for each odour compound, reagent use and pressure drop
- General arrangement drawing showing each stage, the fan, ducting and dosing
- Factory wet test before the scrubber leaves our workshop
- Signed commissioning record of setpoints and readings, ready for your odour management plan
Odour control scrubber specifications
Indicative ranges for odour control systems on wastewater, food, rendering and waste sites, where hydrogen sulphide is usually the compound that sets the design. Your figures are calculated against your duty and issued on a datasheet before anything is built.

| Duty range | 500 – 40,000 m³/h |
|---|---|
| Arrangement | Single, two or three stage; carbon polishing optional |
| Stage 1 chemistry | Dilute sulphuric acid for ammonia and amines |
| Stage 2 chemistry | Sodium hydroxide with sodium hypochlorite for sulphur compounds |
| Hydrogen sulphide (H₂S) removal | 99%+ achievable across a staged system |
| Body materials | GRP or polypropylene; PVDF for hypochlorite-wetted parts |
| Control loops | pH and ORP per stage, with independent dosing |
| Bunding | Integral or separate chemical bunds to 110% of the largest vessel |
Fewer complaints, and the records to show it
Odour is judged by the people who live and work around your site. A scrubber that holds its chemistry turns an odour risk into a controlled, recorded source.
In England, the Environment Agency's H4 guidance expects permitted sites to manage odour through an odour management plan. Our datasheet, commissioning record and dosing logs give that plan the evidence it needs, and we can design to an odour target set by your consultant.
- The treated source stops reaching your boundary
- Dosing and alarms logged through your BMS
- Predictable reagent use and service visits
- Evidence for your odour management plan and any complaint

Questions site managers ask us
Will an odour control scrubber remove every odour?
It removes the compounds it is designed for, typically H₂S, mercaptans, ammonia and amines. Some organic odours are only partly removed, so we tell you where a carbon or biological polishing stage is needed.
Chemical or biological scrubber?
Biological systems suit steady, moderate loads. Chemical scrubbers handle high H₂S, sharp peaks and tight footprints, and start working at full performance from day one. We will tell you which suits your site.
What chemicals does it use?
Typically dilute sulphuric acid for ammonia and amines, and caustic with an oxidant such as hypochlorite or hydrogen peroxide for sulphur compounds. Consumption is on the datasheet, so you can budget for it.
What maintenance does it need?
Reagent top-ups, pH and ORP probe calibration and periodic inspection of the packing, pumps and mist eliminator. We set the service interval around your load: [service interval].
Do you supply outside the UK?
Yes, across the UK and Europe. Equipment is UKCA and CE marked.
Stop the complaints at source
Tell us where the odour comes from, the airflow and what you need to achieve. We will tell you what it takes to remove it, before anyone talks about price.
